  1. Support for managed user authentication by unique ID other than email address

Email address is not a reliable identifier in our world because it tends to change for the end user at certain times:

User decides to legally change their name (via marriage or other situation)

User is moved from one business unit to another (which prompts a change in their email domain suffix from person@busunit1.company.com to person@busunit2.company.com)

User goes on a leave of absence (in which case the email address is removed or temporarily disabled in their HR system)

When these changes happen (usually initiated from their HR system), it will percolate downstream to update their other applications. Their IdP…

  2. Shared Links - Ability to Have Multiple Shared Links per Item (Folder/File)

Currently, Box's shared link system is a 1:1 ratio between items (files/folders) and shared links, meaning there's 1 shared link per item.

However, there are various scenarios where users would like to have the ability to create multiple shared links per item, each link with different permissions, etc.

Example Use Case: For File A...
--I want one 'people with the link' link with a password added and an auto-expiration set for 10 days from today so that I can share this link to time-sensitive content externally
--I also want a persistent 'people in your company' link that my internal colleagues…

This is not currently planned. We would be happy to review with additional use case data. Can you share the problem you’re trying to solve?

  5. Folder transfer takes too long - user loses access

Currently when content is transferred from one owner to another owner, collaborators lose access to the transferred content until the move is complete. Depending on the size of the move it can be an extended period until collaborators can access the content

  6. Option to Show Full Folder Hierarchy when Added Only to Subfolder

Right now, when collaborators are added to a folder, they are not able to see the folder hierarchy that is above the level at which they were added. This is great in many situations. However, there are various scenarios where customers would like users to have the 'full view' of the folder hierarchy above.

  7. Users with View Uploader permissions should have the ability to edit folders they create

In this case, the viewer uploader is the owner of the sub folder they have created, but they cannot do anything to it once it is created.

Can it be filed to be reviewed or modified? If a person can create a folder, surely they can rename it, move files into it. If Box does not want the viewer uploader to be able to rename a folder or move items into it, do not allow viewer uploader the ability to create a sub folder.

Agreed that it is somewhat strange a viewer uploader can create a subfolder. I believe this was put in place, because creating a folder is somewhat like taking the upload action.

Sometimes, when many files are uploaded, it is cleaner to upload them all in one place, and so that is why the Viewer Uploader is granted this permission.

One particular odd consequence, is this person can now create a folder but not rename it (let’s say they made a typo).

This is not oft-requested and impacts a small minority of users. We can look at fixing this in the future with additional customer demand.

  8. Add a way to find out whether a collaboration is external or internal for the GET collaboration endpoint.

When running a collaboration report as an admin you are able to find out Collaborator Type. The GET collaboration endpoint should be able to do the same.

We would like to see additional detail and use cases before considering this for implementation.

  10. Automatically remove external collaborators at the folder level

We want the ability to automatically remove external collaborators after a certain period of time, and we want to be able to customize this depending on the folder in question.

Currently, we can expire external collaborators at the global Enterprise level but this behavior isn't desirable across all folders.

We want to be able to set external collab expiration at the folder level with the ability for different folders to have different expiration periods when the collaborators would be automatically removed.

Thanks for the feedback! However, this is an edge use case which would add complexity to the product. We will review this with additional demand.

  11. Request to add Chunk Downloads, download resume feature

When a large file fails to download, users will have to start the download from the beginning all over again. We would like a retry/resume feature.

Definitely understand why our customers ask this and agree it would be useful.

However, it is a fairly large amount of work to get this implemented and I am not sure it would be used often.

I am going to mark it as “Not Planned” right now, but if we hear this request come up more often, we can review adding it to the backlog.

  13. Set specific expiration dates on the different types of shared links.

You can do it for all in one option but not specifically on one type of shared links. Example just "People with this link"

  14. ITEM_RENAME event should include both old and new names for folder/file

Current the rename item event only shows the new name.

  15. Metadata key values of type {number, date} only searchable by range (gt, lt) and not equality

Assume I have a metadata template "Template" with a key - value of type Number. In both the web app and API, it is not possible to do an equality search:

    templateKey = template
    filters = {"value": 2}

Instead, the search requires specifying both lower and upper bounds. If you're searching for a single value, you then have to approximate it with a gt = 2, lt = 2 combo.

    a) Most importantly, the API documentation implies that the range parameters are not required when searching by number or date.

    b) I think both the webapp UI and the API…

  17. Bulk Download Speed Increase

We're attempting to download files over 10 GB using the bulk download feature but it is taking longer than it would take if they were to download each file individually. It appears we are hitting a limit to which the bulk download feature is actually improving their speeds.

  18. Event Stream for move events wants both current parent and past parent folder IDs

After a user does a move for a folder or file, admin event logs stream should show the past and current folder IDs the item lived in.

  19. Ability to adjust the search string, while maintaining the current set of filtering criteria.

As users are searching and adjusting advanced search filters many of times they realize they need to adjust the original search request, and this can be quite cumbersome when they have to repeat the advanced search filter settings.

  20. Request to increase item count per folder limit

We would like to be able to add more than 15,000 items per folder. We are working with multi-level folders structures within our environment and anticipate having more than 15,000 items within the first level of their subfolders.
