   Please help us understand the use case more, as the ability to apply retention is typically not extended to end users.

   While having the ability to more easily apply retention schedules is a sound goal, END USERS should not be applying retention schedules to content. If the goal is to make it easier for Admins and Co-Admins to apply retention easier is good, it is not recommended this be extended to end-users.
