We are currently not planning to implement this feature and will continue to prevent all Box Drive results from appearing in Explorer/Finder searches.
Box Drive does not download the all of the metadata (File name, folder structure, etc.) of your Box content. Instead, it is downloaded on demand and then evicted when it is no longer relevant. This eviction process is not visible to users and it is not easily predictable. This would cause the search results in Explorer/Finder to be inconsistent for users – sometimes they would find a file and other times they may not if the metadata and file were evicted.
We have chosen not to download all of the metadata (and then keep it up to date with changes) as this can result in a large performance, storage and bandwidth tax which is not scalable – especially in environments where users interface with millions of files/folders.

We are on track towards fixing this. We have made significant improvements in our Files, and Folder counts and their related sizes. They now happen in a near realtime speed and we also have a redundant process that runs and fixes these counts nightly. The current improvements are visible in most of your folders browsing experience and the enterprise level counts. We are in process of fixing counts that you can see for a given user, this will release in Calendar year 2024'Q3. There are also few minor improvements planned for the last quarter of the year.
An error occurred while saving the comment Anonymous commentedIs this related to another issue where they do not support hosting the metadata in Box Drive, only pulling it as needed, meaning you can similarly not get accurate file/folder properties because it doesn't have all of the file metadata present.

This is a feature we would love to get to, but unfortunately it is not on our short term roadmap. Please continue adding your feedback!
An error occurred while saving the comment Anonymous commentedI think this will never be a feature in Windows because the preview handler requires the physical file to be present then asks the relevant application to generate a preview from that file. Box Drive would need to be downloading each file first, and that seems unlikely and slow.
The alternative would be Box making a separate utility that can generate file previews from the files stored on their server, then presenting the user with that preview. It would probably only be available for select file types though, but even previews for just .pdfs, Office files, .txt files etc would be a huge improvement.
An error occurred while saving the comment Anonymous commentedThis is a major shortcoming. I rely on this extensively as I'm sure others do, and not having it inherently increases the amount of time it takes to find a given file. Box is not feasible as a replacement for a network server, but that's what we are stuck with.

An error occurred while saving the comment Anonymous commentedI agree with above/others. Additionally, moving the Box Cache location to an external drive does not control the user access permissions, so unless you set permissions to exclude other users on the device, they will have free access to whatever is cached. Oops.

This feature was delivered for Windows in Box Drive v2.25!
Users can now quickly preview of files in Explorer and Box Drive search without having to open these files. This feature is under consideration for macOS devices.

Thank you for the suggestion. We currently do not have this planned on our roadmap. We will place this in our backlog as we continue evaluating ideas to improve Box Drive.
Please keep the feedback & use cases coming to help us prioritize this in the future!

I don't understand why it's so difficult to download and host all of the metadata. It should be a nearly instantaneous lookup from the Box servers.
I use Everything search, which essentially does the same thing, indexes file/folder structures, and the size of the database is a little over 100MB for several million files.
I would use Box Sync, but I don't have the local drive space to host the several TB of data.
