For Office files stored in Box, we are enabling the capability coauthor in real-time with collaborators. This will eliminate issues that arise when creating conflict copies. For other files types that do not support coauthoring, we do not have a feature planned on our roadmap, to notify users when the file is locked outside of the lock icon that is displayed on the file in the Explorer/Finder view.
We will place this in our backlog as we continue evaluating ideas to improve Box Drive.
Please keep the feedback & use cases coming to help us prioritize this in the future!

We understand the request, but unfortunately this is not on the near-term roadmap. We are currently prioritizing automatically locking/unlocking files on Box Drive for Office files on Windows. We will revisit this feature in the future.

Locking file has its own drawbacks about causing files to be inaccessible. We encourage users to use Office Online as a solution to avoid conflicts.

Your suggestion to use Office Online is not practical for an an Enterprise with 1,000 MS Office for Desktop licenses. Box edit needs to give us the same file locking experience as our self -hosted Windows file services.Anonymous supported this idea · -

Thanks for the suggestion. Please continue to post use cases and feedback, to help us prioritize for a future release.
An error occurred while saving the comment Anonymous commentedBox locks are not strong enough- it should not be possible for another user to unlock a file without Owner, Co-Owner or Admin privilege.

Thanks for the suggestion! This is not currently planned, but we will keep it in mind for future enhancements of the product.
An error occurred while saving the comment Anonymous commentedThis is a frequent annoyance for us, any time several users need to make edits on a large spreadsheet, for example. It's the heart of version control in a collaborative use case.
My further suggestion would be to add the Owner to the list of users that can force an unlock. That person is visible to someone who needs help unlocking a file, whereas admins are not.
Anonymous supported this idea ·An error occurred while saving the comment Anonymous commentedThis is a great annoyance for our enterprise as well. What good is a lock that does nothing. Please plan to enhance locking which is purely cosmetic at the moment.
Sharepoint does locking just fine, btw- just sayin'!

I would like to understand the use case better. Is the folder being shared externally using the shared link feature?

Thanks for your feedback. It’s called Box Tools because it actually contains both Box Edit and Device Trust capabilities in this one installer.

This is not planned at this time.
An error occurred while saving the comment Anonymous commentedPretty sure I don't like this idea. Make it an option in Admin Console, I guess.
We recently had a problem with lost edits in a large Excel budget forecasting spreadsheet stored in Box because of the "loose" nature of the locking functionality. We have over 900 MS Office licenses and have no plan to move to Office Online, nor do we use Box Drive.
As we work to increase user adoption of Box, this issue will become more frequent without a solution.
I am glad you have considered this, and will point out the 138 votes this topic has collected. Please escalate this to a higher priority- the people have spoken!
