Enable native Google share module for externally-shared files stored in Box
Request:
Add the ability to share files directly via Google's native share module (Google Drive sharing UI/flow) rather than requiring the Box share flow, while keeping the underlying file stored in Box.
Use case:
Some of our clients use Box as their primary repository. When we need to share a file with these external clients, the current flow requires them to create a Box account to access the shared file. This is a blocker and several times it's come up that external clients will not create Box accounts just to receive a file.
We still want the file itself to remain stored in Box (Box stays the system of record). We just want the sharing/access layer to go through Google's share module so recipients can access files with their existing Google credentials, without provisioning a Box account.
Proposed behavior:
File remains stored in Box (no change to storage/repository).
Sharing is initiated through the Google share module instead of the Box share flow.
External recipients access the file via Google (existing Google account), with no Box account required.
Business impact:
Removes a hard friction point when collaborating with Box-primary clients, reduces onboarding barriers for external sharing, and preserves Box as the storage backend.
