Break waterfall permissions
Allow for restricted permissions within a shared folder (so permissions are not inherited from the parent folder)
399 votesWe understand the request, but unfortunately this is not on the near-term roadmap.

Fix file/folder size, counts, dates and storage
I'd like to preface this by saying that this is a bug that needs to be fixed, not an idea. Even so, Box suggested we post this here to get others to chime in and say that this should be fixed.
This is a problem that's been around for at least 1.5 years.
Often, when an account's folders and files are transferred to someone else, the account from which the data was transferred still shows something greater than 0 bytes owned. This becomes a problem for deleting that user, because we can't be sure if the transfer worked, and we…
139 votesWe are on track towards fixing this. We have made significant improvements in our Files, and Folder counts and their related sizes. They now happen in a near realtime speed and we also have a redundant process that runs and fixes these counts nightly. The current improvements are visible in most of your folders browsing experience and the enterprise level counts. We are in process of fixing counts that you can see for a given user, this will release in Calendar year 2024'Q3. There are also few minor improvements planned for the last quarter of the year.

Freedom to move folders
Content sprawl is our #1 challenge. Please let us organize our folders. We don't want to interfere with the permissions, but I want to have an "Active Projects" folder and a "Project Archive" folder where I can drag and drop those relevant folders in.
108 votesMoving shared folders is not on the near-term roadmap. We understand the massive importance and we hope that a new product development to be released in 2020 will help address content sprawl.

Setting Folder Autodelete via API
The automatic deletion date of a folder can be set from the web screen, but it seems that it cannot be set from the API.
Could you please provide the ability to set this date from the API?
We have a process that automatically creates thousands of folders using the API, but since it is not possible to set an automatic deletion date, a large number of past folders will continue to remain.

COPY / MOVE API events to include origin file's ID, name and location
Currently there is no way to know which file was copied/moved in Box Events API. It is only possible to see the destination file name and location, and only if the file was copied/moved within one Box instance. This presents a major challenge for customers who want to build custom programs that monitor copy/move activity both inside and outside their Box instances.
39 votesWe have released this change for Copy, and the change for Move is coming in the upcoming months.

"inactive" or "archive" flag maps to less-expensive storage
FEATURE IDEA:
Provide ability to flag/classify files and folders in a way that allows Box to move them to a less-expensive storage offering on the back-end. This can be referred to as an "inactive" or "archive" flag.BENEFITS & BACKGROUND
During the Box Higher Education Community Monthly Open Discussion on January 11th, an idea to submit to Box Pulse was formed, and seemed to have support from all in attendance (25-30 institutions).
Box acknowledges that there is a growing concern around constantly increasing storage, and the costs associated with it. The majority of files stored in Box are perceived (or…
36 votesBox storage platform already has optimizations in place to intelligently detect active (most recently and frequently used) data, and migrate it to cost-effective tiers. Great suggestion though!

Report on Folder Security settings changes
Would like changes to Folder Security settings to show in the Event stream and in Usage Logs. Since all Owners and Co-Owners of folders have access to these configurations, this is crucial to tracking changes to the security of sensitive content.

File Shortcuts
I want to be able to have file shortcuts. They are just pointers to a file that can be placed in other folders throughout the file system. This makes it seem like there are copies of the file in multiple folders and all of the copies get updated whenever one gets updated because its actually one file with a bunch of references pointing to it.
32 votesWe understand the convenience that implementing this feature would bring, but recommend using the existing Bookmarks feature as a more efficient and simplified means for achieving the desired behavior.

Ability to restore folder structures to point-in-time
Similar to version history, we would like the ability to select a folder, folder structure, or subset of folders/files and restore all content therein to a specific point in time. OneDrive recently released a histogram with a timeline slider feature allowing admins to restore select content to a specific period in time. For users moving from on-prem or used to backups, this provides confidence in giving the right access levels to users to get work done with the ability to revert content/structures if needed in case of accidental moved/edited or corrupted content.

Ability to zip/unzip large files from within Box so transport to/from Box isn't a huge bandwidth or time-consuming issue.
Many folks are requesting or have requested the ability to zip/unzip large files from within Box and being able to view them from within Box so transport to/from Box isn't a huge bandwidth or time-consuming issue. Zipping large files is a must-have in these days of high-resolution images and A/V technology.
28 votesWhile we understand the value of such feature, we are currently focused on improving the upload experience to make the ingestion of media files faster.

API endpoint to return ALL objects (recursively) but simplified to create browser tree
I am using the jstree library in my application to create a full browser tree of a user's BOX resources. Please create an endpoint to return ALL objects (recursive) available to an authenticated user inside one root folder . These objects would only require the object ID, TYPE, NAME, VERSION and PARENT(parent-id as string instead of parent object). The jstree lib can take this data and create an entire file browsing tree and then users would call up more information when they click on an object. This would greatly reduce the number of API calls to your server and possibly…

Allow reorganization of received collaborated folders
I would like to request that all users are allowed, as non-folder owners, to place shared folders inside non-shared folders. This allows for better organization for users and therefore an overall better user experience. All other cloud services that I am a part of allow this.
Example:
I own the folders "fruit" and "orange." Someone else owns the folder "apple" and shares it with me. Currently, I cannot place the folder "apple" inside of my "fruit" folder. I would like to request this is changed.Currently, Box permissions (and as it was explained to me, security) does not allow it.…

shared link password
Currently there is an opportunity for Shared Links with a password to be brute force broken, as there are not any controls in place to disable after unsuccessful attempts. Two options to handle this are:
- Implement the configuration in the Shared Link Password protection option to set the number of unsuccessful attempts
- Implement an audit event that documents an unsuccessful Shared Link Password attempt, so that a custom implementation can monitor the unsuccessful attempts, and react accordingly.23 votesWe'll be evaluating improvements to Shared Links later this year and will provide an update at that time.

Block root shared folder renaming
I found it very disappointing when every user with editor's permissions can rename (and probably even delete) root folders. This is the absolutely most typical scenario with shared folders, and everything from cheapest NAS to Azure Sharepoint can prevent renaming (or worse deleting) root folders.
I really miss the typical R/W user - Editor without permissions to delete/rename the root folder.

Get Rid of Waterfall Permissions - Allow Subfolder Security To Be Set Differently
It is absolutely ridiculous that a company as large as Box is using waterfall permissions for all enterprise accounts.
In a business environment, it is absolutely necessary to be able to set specific permissions on subfolders within a large data folder that all users have access to. This is a simple feature included with every other cloud file provider we've ever used.
Needs to be included ASAP.
19 votesHi, I am a Product Manager for Box's File System, I am looking for real world examples from your business needs where the waterfall permissions doesnt work. The more elaborate the example is the better it will be. Would you be willing to share?

Cascading Metadata - applying policy should stay in affect so future value updates cascade without force.
Metadata cascade policy should stay in effect and push future value changes down (as per policy) - until the policy is removed.
Futher only the value(s) updated should be pushed down, not the full set of metadata values..

Automatically remove external collaborators at the folder level
We want the ability to automatically remove external collaborators after a certain period of time, and we want to be able to customize this depending on the folder in question.
Currently, we can expire external collaborators at the global Enterprise level but this behavior isn't desirable across all folders.
We want to be able to set external collab expiration at the folder level with the ability for different folders to have different expiration periods when the collaborators would be automatically removed.
18 votesThanks for the feedback! However, this is an edge use case which would add complexity to the product. We will review this with additional demand.

This suggestion is not under consideration for the current roadmap.

The ability to add an auto-expiration on specific external collaborators access to a specified file or folder.
I would like an Expiration option date picker to be added to the Collaboration Invite window. This will allow our company to let a user privilege expire without us being forced to expire by auto-deleting a folder, or sharing a link that expires but can also be shared with others in the meantime.
16 votesUnfortunately this is not planned in the near-term, but please do keep adding use cases so we can consider this request for the future.
