  1. Box Drive: Display pop up warning when copy / move large number of items

Just like below warning pop-up displayed in WebApp, Box Drive shall pop up a warning to let the user know when large number of files / folders are going to be copied / moved.  (also to prevent accidental copies / moves)

    Copy Items

(!) This operation is not immediate and may take some time.

You are about to copy 9000 items to the folder 'Project Folder 01'. Due to the large number of items, this operation may take up to several hours to complete. During this operation, content within this folder may not be available for access. Do you want…

  2. Manage default Box Drive install folder in Admin Console

To configure the Box Drive folder location, registry keys need to be pushed to all workstations. The customer would like it if there was a setting in the Box Admin Console where you could set the new folder paths for Windows and Mac, and then when a user logs into Box Drive, it would automatically update the registry. This would save admins from having to worry about new users or anyone they might miss with a manual push.

  3. Ability in Box Drive to have documents physically stored on PC or external driver

In Box Drive it would be good that the documents are physically on our PC in offline mode, not just a memory copy (metadata).

  4. Open read-only in BoxDrive

Users with viewer privileges are not allowed to update files, but in the case of files that are updated simply by opening them, such as .xls files, an error will occur each time the file is opened in BoxDrive.
Is it possible to open files from BoxDrive in read-only mode?

Box Drive doesn’t currently provide a built-in “read-only open” option. Instead, whether a file opens in read-only mode depends on the application (Excel, Word, etc.) and the operating system.

Here are a few possible workarounds:

    • Download a local copy and open it outside of Box Drive.
    • Use Box Preview in the web app, which always opens in read-only mode.
    • Adjust application settings (e.g., in Excel you can configure certain files to always open as read-only).
  5. Folder colors

In Box it is not very easy to see what foders are shared externally. There are small globe icons on the collaborators, but if that list is too long, the external collaborator might not show up.

Apart from that: the list of collaborators is not visible in Box Drive.

Box should introduce a new Folder type (different color, different icon) to show that information in this folder is shared with external collaborators. This functionality should be available across all clients (Web, Drive, Mobile).

  6. Box Drive Warning When File Path is too Long

There is a known issue with Box Drive that if a file path is exceeds a character count limit, then the file cannot be opened on desktop, however it can be opened via Box on the web. The issue is, when a user has a file on their desktop, that has a current file path within the character count limits, then moves the file to Box Drive within Windows Explorer and the new path in box exceeds the character limits. As of now, the user can copy and paste into Box Drive and not realize that their new path will…

  7. List View of Marked For Offline Files

It is imperative that we have a view of which folders we have Make Available Offline. We can't hunt and peck through hundreds of folders with a Green Checkmark on it to Make Available Online Only when we're finished with a big "sync". This is already a hoop we're jumping through because we can't "sync" to an external drive so we have to manually manage internal Hard Drive space. A user should be able to see what they have marked for offline at a glance so they can easily reverse the storage affect on local hard drives.

  8. Box Drive - Add Support for .pst Files

While .pst files are visible from Box's web client, they are not visible from Box Drive. This results in an inability to connect .pst files from Box to Outlook, and is preventing us from rolling out Box across our enterprise.

  9. Box Drive & Box Shield

Currently Box Shield classifies copy & pasting within Box Drive as downloading which results in a false alarm notification. It would be great to be able to see the difference between moving files and actually downloading files from a Box report.

  10. See and share full path from Box Drive

A function that enables to share Box Drive location/path between users.

When using Box Drive on a daily bases, it is inconvenient that the user needs to open the link on the browser once to identify the specific location/folder path.

It would improve to shorten the work flow if the users can see the full path from Box Drive so that they don’t have to go through the process to open box.com.

  11. Disable background sync of Box Drive (for throttled or metered connections)

See below for link and post in the Box Community.

This feature would allow background syncing to be turned off for Box Drive. Because MFO and caching are stored in a "container" that is only available while Box Drive is running - there is no way to access MFO files while connected to a bandwidth limited internet connection. You either are forced to background sync or not have access to your MFO files.

Disable Box Drive background syncing for low bandwidth connections
I've (mostly) adapted to using Box Drive instead of Box Sync.

But a key feature that was…

  14. Display warning if a document is open

Display a warning similar to read-only if another team member has a file open. Currently this is not possible without code installed at the individual PC level and there is no solution with MAC (just confirmed with support). The conflicting versions can be frustrating for teams and the tiny lock icon is just not a large enough warning when opening from box drive.

For Office files stored in Box, we are enabling the capability coauthor in real-time with collaborators. This will eliminate issues that arise when creating conflict copies. For other files types that do not support coauthoring, we do not have a feature planned on our roadmap, to notify users when the file is locked outside of the lock icon that is displayed on the file in the Explorer/Finder view.

We will place this in our backlog as we continue evaluating ideas to improve Box Drive.

Please keep the feedback & use cases coming to help us prioritize this in the future!

  15. Being able to sort by created date instead of modified\updated.

Would be super helpful for people storing photos. If we snap a photo on our phone and then upload it to box in bulk, the date the picture was brought into box is the date shown. It would be nice to sort by file created date. You already have this date in the "file information" section when you right click on a file. Please make this available and let me know. Please please please.

    thanks

    Natalie.

  16. Comments / Tasks from Desktop (Box Drive)

In order to currently leave a comment on a file we have to right click on it, click on view on Box drive, which opens chrome, loads the file, then click on the comment icon on the right and then leave our comment

A quicker and much simpler way of doing this would be to bring in comments and tasks into the box drive app to save us all of those steps of having to do this through our browser. There are a couple ways of doing this

    1) Bring in notifications, tasks and a comment stream into the system…

  17. Improve Box Drive memory usage

Box recommend 4GB of RAM as minimum system specifications. But 4GB of RAM is not enough since Box Drive tends to use more than 1GB memory when a user open folder which has a lot of items. Therefore the fetching function should be improved to run efficiently on 4GB of RAM

  18. I would like to see functionality added to the terminate_sessions API to delete cache information.

When an administrator deletes BoxDrive session information, the cache remains.
Even if an administrator deletes BoxDrive session information using the terminatesessions API, the cache will remain on the user side because this API is different from normal logoff.
In this situation, even if the user loses the authority to handle the data, the data remains at hand, which may cause a security incident by a malicious user.
Therefore, we would like to add a function to delete cache information when the terminate
    sessions API is executed.
In the above difficult case (because deleting the client's cache seems difficult due…

  19. Can't filter search files marked for offline use to unmark quickly and regain HD space.

NEED ASAP: See file list of marked for "offline use" to quickly/easily unmark to regain HD space. I regularly run low on space locally. Users should have a way for Box to ID files based on cache of local machine—to "unmark all" quickly, AS WELL AS selectively with a list of files marked offline to keep any files "offline available" as needed. A MUST-HAVE feature for managing files, since the whole point of box is file storage and accessibility.

  20. Folder-Level Sync Controls: Restrict Managed Users from syncing a folder (even if they're an Editor / Co-Owner)

Be able to disable sync at the folder level regardless of co-owner or editor collaboration level. Users need to be added at these collaboration levels but they should not have the ability to sync certain folders to their machine (e.g., heavily collaborated content).

Box Shield may be a potential workaround for users interested in restricting syncing of specific content by classifying it. Though this will also prevent any downloads of the content as well.
